Union Pacific, City of Houston, Harris County and Bayou City Initiative discuss moving forward with rail yard remediation

Houston, August 26, 2022

Union Pacific Railroad and representatives from the City of Houston, Harris County and the Bayou City Initiative said today they started discussions in an effort to reach agreement on measures needed to remediate a former wood-tie preserving site.

The announcement came after a meeting among the railroad and the other parties concerning the former Houston Wood Preserving Works Site (HWPW).

As a sign of that, Union Pacific notified the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Friday that it is engaged in these discussions, and the City of Houston, Harris County and Bayou City Initiative join Union Pacific in asking for a temporary pause in the agency’s processing of the HWPW RCRA permit, allowing the local parties to discuss adjustments that are designed to enhance and speed up remediation. This pause in processing the permit is not intended to circumvent the administrative process and does not impact private litigation.

“Union Pacific believes this is a positive step forward and appreciates the opportunity to work together with the City of Houston, Harris County and Bayou City Initiative,” Clint Schelbitzki, assistant vice president – Public Affairs, Southern Region. “The well-being of all Houstonians – including our important neighbors in the Fifth Ward and those nearby – are at the heart of all our steps, rooted in compassion, collaboration and most importantly action.”
