Stay Safe While Hunting and Fishing Near Railroad Tracks

Accessing outdoor spots by walking on railroad tracks, bridges or right of way is dangerous – and illegal.

Union Pacific urges all outdoor enthusiasts to stay alert and follow these safety tips:

  • Only cross tracks at approved public crossings.
  • Always expect a train – trains can approach silently and from either direction.
  • Trains overhang tracks by at least three feet; loose equipment may extend even farther.
  • Railroad bridges and trestles are for trains only – never use them as shortcuts.
  • If your route requires trespassing on railroad property, find a safer alternative access point.
