Union Pacific urges all outdoor enthusiasts to stay alert and follow these safety tips:
- Only cross tracks at approved public crossings.
- Always expect a train – trains can approach silently and from either direction.
- Trains overhang tracks by at least three feet; loose equipment may extend even farther.
- Railroad bridges and trestles are for trains only – never use them as shortcuts.
- If your route requires trespassing on railroad property, find a safer alternative access point.
