Union Pacific Delivers Industry-Leading Results with Commitment to Safety, Service and Operational Excellence

Our Safety, Service and Operational Excellence (SSOE) strategy has positioned us for success. Union Pacific’s commitment to be the best at safety and deliver the high level of the service we sold our customers with operational excellence is working.

We delivered industry-leading results and are setting new standards across the board. Outstanding work, team, well done!

Safety – Safety remains our top priority, and our results for the quarter show excellent improvement. More importantly, our three-year trend line demonstrates continued progress in both personal injury and derailment rates. Our focus remains ensuring every employee goes home safe to the families waiting for them, every day.

Service – We are reporting record service results. Our service performance index metrics prove we are living up to and exceeding the high level of service we promised our customers. Freight Car Velocity improved 10% to 221 miles per day, driven by reduced terminal dwell and increased train speed. Our Intermodal Service Performance finished at 99% and Manifest at 97%, reflecting gains in our year-over-year service product. 

Operational Excellence – We delivered this outstanding service while still rising to manage the unexpected. Our buffer enabled us to handle stronger than expected international intermodal volume, as well as a 30% surge in coal volume. Leveraging new technology is enhancing our terminal processes, allowing us to adjust transportation plans and eliminate touch points while also improving our cycle times. We are moving customers’ freight faster, enabling our business development wins.

Investing for Growth – Our customers appreciate our agility and ability to quickly adapt to fluctuations in volume and are entrusting us with more business. Strong service puts us in a position to continue to invest for growth in new areas. Earlier this month we opened our Kansas City Intermodal Terminal – our fourth new intermodal terminal in the past few years. It will serve the growing Midwestern markets, providing convenient and cost-effective access to our 32,000-mile network.

These results are only possible because of our culture and mindset. I’ve said from the start that we have a great team with the ability to see what’s possible and deliver it. I’ve enjoyed traveling our system with our entire leadership team and seeing your work firsthand. Last month, the Dallas team hosted our SSOE leaders, letting us experience their work up close. We also traveled to North Platte, spending time with the Mechanical and Engineering teams on the front lines. What you are doing and delivering across our system is impressive, and what you think matters.

Keep using our unscripted town halls to speak up, ask questions and raise the issues that will help all of us continue to get stronger and better together. You are proving who we are, what we are made of and what we can do when we focus on what we can control, showing the industry and the world what’s possible.
