New Road Crossings Application Procedure

Grade Crossing Safety

Nothing is more important to Union Pacific Railroad than the safety of its employees, customers and communities. Union Pacific believes the safest crossing is no crossing and an ongoing goal of the railroad is to reduce the overall number of grade crossings to help improve safety for pedestrians, motorists and Union Pacific employees.

Application Procedure

For safety reasons, Union Pacific insists that every entity - public or private - exhaust all options before applying for a new grade crossing, including considering parallel or other roads leading to existing crossings, as well as access from other directions.

Applicants should submit a road crossing proposal at the following link: Submit a Union Pacific Public Projects Inquiry

Applicants should consult the Union Pacific Railroad Public Projects Manual available at the link directly below for the  requirements for new grade road crossings: Public Projects Group | Union Pacific

If Union Pacific approves a new grade crossing, applicants must enter into a written road crossing agreement before construction begins on the new grade crossing.  The agreement will be prepared by Union Pacific and will cover the construction, maintenance and use of the new grade crossing.

Applicants will be responsible to pay Union Pacific for any and all actual project costs that are incurred by the Union Pacific, including but not limited to, all required engineering review fees and the actual cost of construction work.

Applicants will also be responsible to pay Union Pacific for any and all real estate license fees and/or the market based valuation for Railroad real estate needed in support of the project; and any and all required annual maintenance fees for the grade crossing and/or its related facilities.

Applicants will be required to comply with all contractual provisions included in the road crossing agreement.
