Q: Is there an admission fee to see Big Boy?
A. Except at locations noted on the schedule and specifically mandated by the site, admission to see the Big Boy is free. Union Pacific is proud to sponsor this event and share Big Boy No. 4014 with communities across the country.
Q: Once I’m at the event site, will I have to wait in line to see Big Boy?
A: Possibly. Due to limited capacity and anticipated crowd size, guests should plan for wait times. Please note that waiting requires standing for extended periods.
Q: Will restrooms be available at the event site?
A: Yes. Port‑a‑potties will be available for guests during event hours.
Q: What is the event site environment like?
A: Big Boy No. 4014 is displayed in an active, working rail environment. Surfaces may be uneven, which could present accessibility challenges for some guests.
Q: Will there be other activities at the event site?
A: Big Boy No. 4014 is the main attraction. As the world’s largest operating steam locomotive—and the only one of the eight remaining Big Boys still in operation—this is a rare opportunity to see railroading history up close.
Q: Can I tour the inside of Big Boy’s cab or other train cars?
A: No. Cab and railcar access is not available. However, we invite you to explore our online photo gallery and learn more about Union Pacific’s heritage.
At select locations, Union Pacific’s Experience Rail Car will also be available for viewing.
Q: Where can I buy Big Boy souvenirs?
A: Merchandise is available online. Celebrate America’s 250th and Big Boy’s Coast‑to‑Coast Tour by visiting Union Pacific’s online store—and show your support by wearing your tour gear to the event.
Q: Any tips to help plan my visit?
A: Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Stay hydrated—water bottles are allowed at the event site. Please note: there is no designated seating available.
Q: Can I fly my drone?
A: Safety is Union Pacific’s top priority. Drones are not permitted during Display Days. Additionally, when Big Boy is in motion, drones must remain at least 25 feet laterally from the tracks.
Q: Could the Display Day schedule change?
A: Union Pacific operates 365 days a year, rain or shine, and we work to minimize disruptions during Display Days. While we’re committed to providing a great guest experience, safety is our top priority. Schedules may change, so we recommend checking the event schedule for the most up-to-date information.
Q: Where can I find the latest updates on Big Boy’s schedule and location?
A: Visit UPSteam.com for the latest schedule details and access to the live Big Boy tracker.
