For Yates, acting without thinking just once resulted in loaded rail cars, which weigh hundreds of tons, derailing around her in a rail yard.
“I’m grateful I didn’t hurt or kill anybody – or myself,” the 20-year railroader said. “That’s what happens when you get complacent.”
Yates’ close call ties to Union Pacific’s critical Operating rule 8.2, which requires yard employees to verify that switch mechanisms are properly lined before moving rail cars.
