Status of the Railroad - A Message from Kenny Rocker, EVP, Marketing & Sales

Announcement Number: CN2026-04

To Our Customers,

Before I move into my regular monthly update, I need to take a minute and address the inaccurate claims last week by Canadian National Railway (CN) regarding the Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger. The traffic study included in our filings with the Surface Transportation Board was conducted by the same expert CN used for its Iowa Northern merger and applies the same methodology. It provides a reliable estimate of the traffic the combined Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern expect to attract by offering a more competitive, more efficient single-line service. As I said earlier this year, misinformation like this damages rail’s credibility, shakes confidence in the marketplace and distracts from what matters most: more competition and a better customer experience.

Against that backdrop, the past month has reinforced why this work is so important. I’ve had the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations across our industry and beyond, from speaking with the Journal of Commerce and connecting with students at the University of Wisconsin to collaborating closely with our Customer Advisory Board. These discussions have provided valuable opportunities to share the benefits of our proposed merger with Norfolk Southern and highlight how a single, integrated freight rail network can strengthen the U.S. supply chain, enhance competition and support long-term growth for our customers.

Through these engagements, we’ve also deepened our understanding of how emerging technologies like AI are shaping our business and more importantly, how they help us continue to grow together with you.

Our Metrics
Following are our key operating metrics for the week ending March 27, 2026. Over the past month, our network has demonstrated strong resilience, with our Operations team successfully restoring service across several impacted areas.

  • Freight Car Velocity – 226 miles per day
  • Train Velocity – 20.0 miles per hour
  • Terminal Dwell – 20.1 hours

Sustainability
Shipping your freight by rail reduces your carbon footprint and benefits the environment, cutting greenhouse gas emission by up to 75% compared to truck. Last year, Union Pacific was recognized for our sustainability leadership by S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook and JUST Capital's 2026 rankings named Union Pacific #2 in overall and #1 in Industrial Goods & Services. While we've made significant progress, we know there is still more work to do.

Our goals include setting a science-based target to reduce absolute Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 (categories 1, 2 & 3) GHG emissions 50.4% by 2030 from a 2018 base year. This week, we began emailing customized carbon emission letters highlighting the environmental impact of shipping with Union Pacific. If you have questions, please contact your sales representative or you can learn more here.

Thank You
Thank you for your continued trust and business. We value the opportunity to support your supply chain and remain committed to delivering safe, reliable rail service.

Sincerely,

Kenny Rocker
Executive Vice President, Marketing & Sales
