Status of the Railroad - A Message from Kenny Rocker, EVP, Marketing & Sales

Announcement Number: CN2026-9

To Our Customers,

This month brings an important milestone in our work with Norfolk Southern to create America's first transcontinental railroad. The Surface Transportation Board (STB) accepted our merger application, a positive step toward a reinvigorated, more competitive U.S. railroad industry. We also acknowledge the STB's request for additional information and reiterate our commitment to work constructively with the board toward a mid-2027 completion.

As we move forward, we’re working closely with Norfolk Southern on integration planning so we’re ready to deliver the merger’s benefits in anticipation of STB merger approval next year. We’re grateful to the many customers who submitted letters of support and who are excited at the prospect of receiving faster, more reliable rail service. Our priority for the year remains the same, to run a safe, reliable railroad for you every day, which is reflected in our latest operating performance.

Our Metrics
Our operating performance continues to demonstrate the team’s commitment to delivering the service we sold you. Our network ran well in May, with velocity and dwell holding steady as we head into summer demand season. Following are our key operating metrics for the week ending May 22, 2026:

  • Freight Car Velocity – 231 miles per day
  • Train Velocity – 20.7 miles per hour
  • Terminal Dwell – 19.8 hours

Summer Planning
With the unofficial start to summer in full swing, this season brings a unique opportunity to showcase our history, as Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, journeys to the East Coast as part of a coast-to-coast tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. You can explore more about the 50 whistle-stops across 10 states by viewing the schedule here.

And lastly, as we enjoy the season, it’s important to stay prepared. With hurricane season starting June 1, now is a great time to review best practices and ensure you’re ready for potential impacts.

Thank You
Thank you for your continued trust in Union Pacific. Our team remains committed to delivering safe, reliable service and supporting your success in the marketplace. We appreciate your partnership and look forward to serving you.

Sincerely,

Kenny Rocker
Executive Vice President, Marketing & Sales
