President Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Locomotive

Union Pacific honors President Abraham Lincoln’s legacy connecting the nation and unleashing economic innovation with a specially painted commemorative locomotive, No. 1616 – a symbolic tribute to the nation’s 16th president. Lincoln’s signing of the Pacific Railway Act of 1862 created Union Pacific and authorized the construction of the transcontinental railroad, connecting the country during a pivotal time and igniting a period of unprecedented growth.

Revealed through a rendering on Presidents Day, Feb. 17, 2025, Locomotive No. 1616 serves as a lasting tribute to Lincoln’s vision. It is the second presidential locomotive in Union Pacific’s Heritage Fleet, joining No. 4141, created to honor President George H.W. Bush. The Lincoln locomotive’s paint scheme is aligned with No. 4141 but has unique colors from Lincoln’s era, serving as a nod to locomotive No. 119, one of the two locomotives present at Promontory Summit, Utah, marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, officially uniting the eastern and western parts of the nation.

The Lincoln locomotive will serve as a traveling ambassador. Its first public stop will be May 10 at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland, Oregon, in celebration of National Train Day. As additional stops are finalized, details will be shared on UP.com and social media.
