Hundreds gathered in downtown Omaha to see Big Boy No. 4014 up close as it begins the eastern leg of its historic coast-to-coast tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Attendees also had the opportunity to meet US Speedskating athletes Giorgia Birkeland and Cooper McLeod, who shared insights from their Olympic journeys and connected with fans of all ages.
“Events like this are a powerful reminder of what connects us – pride in our history, commitment to excellence and the communities we serve,” said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. “Bringing Big Boy together with these world-class athletes reflects the spirit of performance, teamwork and determination that defines both Union Pacific and US Speedskating.”
Union Pacific is proud to be an official sponsor of US Speedskating, the organization dedicated to supporting speed skaters from local clubs to the Olympics. The two iconic brands share similar values and a passion for winning, including a belief that every day is a new day to strive to be the fastest and the safest.
“It was very special to meet the Omaha community and see the excitement around Big Boy,” Birkeland said. “There’s a real connection between what we do as athletes and what Union Pacific represents – pushing forward, working as a team and striving to be our best.”
McLeod echoed that sentiment, noting the unique energy of the event: “You could feel the pride and passion here,” he said. “Interacting with fans and being part of an event that celebrates both history and future achievement was something I won’t forget.”
Big Boy’s 2026 tour celebrates America’s 250th anniversary, with a birthday celebration planned in Philadelphia on the Fourth of July. It connects communities across the country and honors rail’s critical role as the backbone of the nation’s economy. The tour ends July 29 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, with Big Boy – the world’s largest operating steam locomotive – having traveled through 14 states.
