Union Pacific Grant Improves North Omaha Road Safety

A neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska, is taking action to slow drivers along a main thoroughfare.

A new electronic speed control sign is a welcome sight for many who live along North 30th Street, more than a year after a driver lost control and crashed into a day care center. No one was hurt, but the near-miss motivated local nonprofit groups to pursue resources for safety improvements.

The Miller Park-Minne Lusa Neighborhood Association and North Omaha Commercial Club, in conjunction with the local chapter of Keep Kids Alive Drive 25, were awarded a local grant from Union Pacific’s Community Ties Giving Program to purchase the mobile speed control sign.

Given that neighbors have advocated for change for years, Nancy Gaarder, president of the Miller Park-Minne Lusa Neighborhood Association, is happy to see a real solution to what’s been a challenging endeavor.

“Over the years, we have appealed to the city and state for help with speeding traffic, but solutions have been limited because the road is a state highway and truck route,” Gaarder said. “This grant from Union Pacific is one of the first tangible investments in slowing traffic. It was a big morale boost.”

Data from the sign is being used by the Omaha Police Department to help analyze area traffic concerns.

Funding invested by Union Pacific’s Community Ties Giving Program ranges from local grants and sponsorships to key partnerships designed to provide long-term impact in our communities.
