Ann Lorenzo, manager-Design, was honored with the second-ever Courageous Star Award from Union Pacific’s Employee Resource Group, EASE, in recognition for her advocacy and awareness efforts supporting her toddler’s health condition. EASE raises awareness and fosters support for employees impacted by disability.

“Since Archie was born, she has been by his side through many treatments, surgeries, physical and occupational therapy appointments, and trips to Shriners Hospital,” said Ashley Sladky, manager-Design, and one of Lorenzo’s nominators. “Ann describes her journey with Archie as quite the ride.”
EASE leadership annually presents the Courageous Star Award to employees who shine bright while managing life’s challenges. The award honors employee caregivers, disability advocates and allies, as well as those managing their own disabilities, as they demonstrate strength, positivity and determination in the face of adversity.
Archie was diagnosed with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), a rare congenital muscle condition that occurs in about 1 in every 3,000 children. The disorder impacts joint and muscle development, limiting range of motion. During AMC Awareness Month, Lorenzo communicated her family’s story, posted daily whiteboard facts, shared blue treats and coordinated a ‘wear blue’ day to promote awareness at Union Pacific.

“Thank you to everyone in the EASE community for everything you do,” Lorenzo shared. “Stepping into the shoes of a mother of a child with AMC is challenging at times, but as the AMC community always says – and it is so true – ‘these kids will surprise you.’ Our tough little man is one of the happiest boys you’ll ever meet.”
Lorenzo was nominated by peers for her outlook and efforts.
“Ann’s spirit, energy and drive for advocacy radiate every day,” Sladky said. “She is very deserving of this recognition.”
Recipients are honored with the opportunity to direct a monetary donation from EASE to the nonprofit of their choosing. Lorenzo chose Shriners Children’s Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, to receive a Courageous Star-directed donation.
