Dowling's Critical Thinking Bolsters UP's Financial Strategies

Congratulations Tony Dowling

Pushing the envelope, facilitating open dialogue and fostering a collaborative environment enables Union Pacific’s Tony Dowling, and the Finance team he leads, to make notable contributions to railroad operations.

Dowling, general director-Finance, has driven strategic analyses of Union Pacific’s multibillion-dollar investments – from locomotive modernization and terminal expansions to siding extensions. His focus on financial responsibility, value-added data analytics, and continuous process and project improvement are a winning combination, giving railroad leadership the best information possible to make strategic decisions.

In recognition for his efforts, Dowling was one of four U.S. recipients recently honored among International Railway Journal’s 2022 Young Leaders in Rail. IRJ selected 10 awardees under the age of 40 who are making an impact and well-positioned to become industry leaders.

Dowling has held several roles within the Finance Department, including budgeting, capital investment analysis, investor relations and capital finance. Notable achievements include helping shape the railroad’s key performance indicators and financial measures; serving as a member of the special project team that developed Rail Relief; and graduating in 2019 from Union Pacific's Leadership Development Program.

“The railroad’s impact is far reaching, from grain to automotive, and the intricacies of seeing the economy firsthand intrigues me,” Dowling said. “That’s really what prompted my interest in the railroad, and here I am 16 years later, not regretting anything one bit.”

Outside of work, Dowling enjoys spending time with his spouse and four children, coaching youth sports teams, volunteering with his church and leading a local Cub Scouts den.

Congratulations, Tony.
