Wind Network

The Union Pacific wind network serves as a vital link in the wind energy supply chain, providing a reliable and efficient mode of transportation for wind turbine components including tower sections, blades, nacelles and hubs.

Our network consists of more than 32,000 miles of rail spanning 23 states, connecting major wind turbine manufacturing facilities and port origins to wind farms and installation sites across the country. It includes existing distribution centers for the loading, unloading, and staging of wind turbine components, and are equipped with all necessary infrastructure, such as cranes and specialized handling equipment, to facilitate the efficient transfer of components from railcar. Additionally, our network accesses many of America’s fastest growing wind states, including Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa and Illinois.

Growth

With rapid growth on the horizon, Union Pacific is prepared to help the wind energy industry reach new heights — in many cases, literally.

One major factor in our contribution to wind energy generation in the United States is our investment in rail capacity expansion. This includes regularly upgrading tracks, terminals, and equipment to accommodate larger and more efficient wind turbine components. Our commitment to expanding capacity ensures that Union Pacific can meet the increasing transportation demands of the wind energy sector.
