Industry Design Review Consultants and Material Vendors

Plan Submission Requirements for Design Consultants

All track design, including grading and other civil work related to track components, must ultimately comply with Union Pacific engineering standards and requirements.

Industry customers may select any qualified design consultant to prepare their track design plans. Union Pacific does not require that initial design work be performed by a specific firm or list of firms.

Prior to formal submission to Union Pacific, all track design plans prepared by a consultant not on the approved reviewer list shall undergo a formal third‑party review by a Union Pacific approved review consultant. This review is intended to confirm conformance with Union Pacific standards, identify required revisions, and promote a more efficient review process. A completed comment resolution form from the reviewing firm shall accompany the plan submittal.

Track Material Vendor Requirements

If your track construction project includes connecting to Union Pacific-owned track, your rail contractor will provide a turnout with connecting rods, switch stand and any other required Class I track materials. These track materials should be purchased from a Union Pacific-approved vendor, Misc Dwg 6003. You will receive additional detail regarding this process and the necessary materials as part of the track design approval process.
