President Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Locomotive

Union Pacific honors President Abraham Lincoln’s legacy connecting the nation and unleashing economic innovation with a specially painted commemorative locomotive, No. 1616 – a symbolic tribute to the nation’s 16th president. Lincoln’s signing of the Pacific Railway Act of 1862 created Union Pacific and authorized the construction of the transcontinental railroad, connecting the country during a pivotal time and laying the foundation for America’s freight rail supply chain.

Revealed through a rendering on Presidents Day, Feb. 17, 2025, Locomotive No. 1616 serves as a lasting tribute to Lincoln’s vision. It is the second presidential locomotive in Union Pacific’s Heritage Fleet, joining No. 4141, created to honor President George H.W. Bush. The Lincoln locomotive was designed with the unique colors from Lincoln’s era, and serves as a nod to locomotive No. 119, one of the two locomotives present at Promontory Summit, Utah, marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad and uniting the eastern and western parts of the nation.

Union Pacific officially unveiled Lincoln Locomotive No. 1616 on April 30, 2025, to a standing-room-only crowd at Downing B. Jenks Locomotive Shop in North Little Rock, Arkansas. More than 150 employees, dignitaries and community members gathered for the celebration, reflecting on Lincoln’s enduring influence in uniting the country through rail.
