Best Practices for Loading Intermodal Containers

Announcement Number: SQ2026-02

To Our Customers,

Union Pacific is committed to safely delivering your freight from origin to destination and that commitment starts with proper loading. Due to a recent increase in load shifts on our network, it is critical to use the correct blocking and bracing techniques to ensure safety of all parties and prevent damage.

When loading freight into intermodal containers, following our SAFE LOAD guidelines helps prevent cargo damage, reduce safety risks and protect against potential derailments:

  • Secure the lading
  • Always plan your load
  • Fill the empty spaces
  • Evenly distribute weight
  • Look to ensure lading does not exceed 2,500 lbs. per linear foot
  • Only use AAR-approved dunnage
  • Apply appropriate bracing and fill materials
  • Do not use pallets as fill material

View our Best Practices for Loading Intermodal Containers for additional tips on loading your containers. If you have questions about loading diagrams, see our load plans for general guidance. For specific loading diagrams based on your product specifications, please contact a load consulting engineer.
