Port Houston On-Dock Rail Service

Service Expansion Offers Access to Multiple Union Pacific Intermodal Facilities

Our service between the Barbours Cut Container Terminal at Port Houston offers access to multiple metropolitan areas on our rail network. Ocean carriers and Beneficial Cargo Owners (BCO) will have more options to move their containers inland to Union Pacific-served markets. The on-dock operations at Port Houston streamlines containers from the ships, directly to flatcars, eliminating the need for a dray carrier to transfer the container to a separate intermodal facility. The on-dock operation saves time and will also contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

What's New

  • Opens direct routes to our fastest growing intermodal terminals.
  • Containers are transferred from containerships — directly to intermodal well cars.
  • On-dock operations remove truck movements to our Settegast Yard (approximately 30 miles).
  • Ocean carriers discharging at Bayport can also utilize the new on-dock product in conjunction with a short-haul dray from Bayport to Barbours Cut.

The terminal features 300 acres of container yard space, six berths, 29 entry truck gates, and more than 8,000 feet of working track connecting to off-site warehouses. Some of these improvements include investing in additional container yard space, concrete rehabilitation and more STS cranes to add to our terminal fleet.
