Union Pacific Railroad's iconic Big Boy steam locomotive No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, will journey between Wyoming and Colorado later this month. The limited excursion will offer rail fans another opportunity to see the railroad’s rich history in action.

Mark your calendars:

  • Sept. 30
    • Cheyenne, Wyoming, departs 11 a.m. MDT
    • Greeley, Colorado, 12:45 p.m.-1:15 p.m. MDT
  • Oct. 1
    • Eaton, Colorado, 12:30 p.m.-1 p.m. MDT
(park west of Highway 85 and cross at the Collins Street pedestrian crosswalk)
    • Cheyenne, Wyoming, 2:30 p.m.-3:15 p.m. MDT; operational move to turn locomotive at Speer, Wyoming, returning to Cheyenne 5 p.m. MDT.

In July, Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy steam locomotive No. 4014  joined up with our newest commemorative locomotive, No. 1616, also making two public whistle-stops in Greeley, Colorado

Although the 2025 steam schedule is limited, the Big Boy will return to the rails in a big way in 2026 to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.

Keep Safety Top of Mind

  • Stay back at least 25 feet from all railroad tracks. This includes drones.
  • Railroad tracks, trestles, yards and right of way are private property - do not trespass.
  • Never assume tracks are abandoned or inactive - ALWAYS expect a train.
  • Be a safe and considerate driver - do not pace the train.
  • Be Aware of the Environment: While we strive to provide access to all guests, Big Boy is positioned in a working rail environment with uneven walking surfaces that may create difficulty for accessibility.
