Why Ship by Rail?

  • It’s “green” (how fitting)! Trains are the most environmentally responsible way to ship freight over land. On average, U.S freight railroads can move one ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel, generating a carbon footprint that is 75% less than trucks.
  • You don’t need a pot of gold. Trains typically cost less than trucks, especially over long distances. Want to compare? Find out how much it would cost to ship your freight by rail.
  • You can ship almost anything by rail…but not leprechauns. The list of things railroads can ship is much longer than the list of things they can’t. Personal property, passengers, pets and other living things are out (as are mythical beings), but just about everything else is in.
  • You can ship almost anywhere…even Ireland! Railroads haul freight all across North America and other continents, too. Some of those shipments go to ports, where ocean carriers haul them overseas. So technically, railroads help shipments travel worldwide. You can even ship by rail if you don’t have access to tracks or the luck of the Irish.
  • You can ship a LOT at once. One rail car can carry the same amount of cargo as 3-4 trucks. Which would you rather have, a truckload of gold or a rail car?
